Markdown to PowerPoint (PPTX)
Editable PowerPoint from Markdown: real titles, bullets, tables, speaker notes and alt text.
How it works
Converts a Markdown deck into a .pptx file written by hand in Office Open XML: real title placeholders, editable text boxes with bullet levels, bold, italic and links, native tables with a header row, pictures with alternative text, charts and diagrams as pictures with their description, speaker notes and a reading order that follows the Markdown. Opens in PowerPoint, Keynote, LibreOffice Impress and Google Slides.
- The package follows ECMA-376 PresentationML: presentation, one slide master with a title and a title-and-content layout, a theme with the deck colours and Noto Sans, one slide part per slide, notes pages for slides with speaker notes, and relationships for pictures and hyperlinks.
- Shapes are placed on the same boxes as the PDF layout (millimetres × 36,000 EMU); the slide title uses the title placeholder, so the outline view, the accessibility checker and screen readers see it. Decorative bars are marked decorative.
- Text keeps its Markdown structure: one paragraph per list item with its level and bullet or number, runs with bold, italic, code font and external hyperlinks, right-to-left paragraphs for RTL decks; tables are native with the first row marked as header row.
- Charts and diagrams are rendered to PNG at 200 dpi from the same vector shapes as the PDF and carry their alternative text. The ZIP is written deterministically (fixed timestamps), so equal input gives an identical file.
Charts and diagrams are pictures in the PPTX, not editable PowerPoint charts. Fonts are not embedded in the PPTX: viewers without Noto Sans use a similar sans-serif font, so line breaks can differ slightly from the PDF.

How to use Markdown to PowerPoint (PPTX)
Turn a Markdown outline into an editable PowerPoint file with real slide titles, bullet lists, tables, speaker notes and alternative text on every chart.
What it is for
Sometimes the slides have to end up in PowerPoint, Keynote, LibreOffice Impress or Google Slides — because a colleague edits them, or the event wants a .pptx. This tool writes a real PowerPoint file from the same Markdown as the PDF tool, so you can write fast in plain text and still hand over something editable.
The file uses the title placeholder on every slide, so the outline view, the slide list and screen readers see the titles. Bullets are real paragraphs with indent levels, tables are real tables with a header row, links stay clickable and notes land in the notes pane. Charts and diagrams become sharp pictures with your alternative text attached; decorative bars are marked as decorative. It does not use Office templates or master layouts beyond one simple master, and charts are not editable chart objects.
Worked example
The default quarterly review produced 6 slides and a file of 147,814 bytes. The shape summary lists per slide what is inside:
- Slide 3 “Revenue by month” has 1 text box and 1 picture whose alternative text is “Revenue rose every month, from 120 k€ in October to 168 k€ in December.” — the
alt:line of the chart block — and it has speaker notes. - Slide 4 has one picture (the flowchart) with the alt text “A request is answered with a help article when the issue is known; otherwise a ticket is opened, fixed and answered.”
- Slide 5 has 1 table and 1 text box.
With Theme set to Slate and Slide shape to 4:3, the outline example became 5 slides of 254 × 190.5 mm and a file of only 19,649 bytes, because it has no pictures. The Arabic example wrote its paragraphs right-to-left (rtl="1", right-aligned) and kept the Arabic chart description as alt text.
The same Markdown gives the same file byte for byte, so you can compare versions by their SHA-256.
How to read the result
- Slides and meta: size, theme, language and direction used.
- Shapes: per slide the title, number of text boxes, tables and pictures, every alternative text and whether there are notes. An empty alt-text list on a slide with a picture means you should add one.
- Warnings: the same layout warnings as the PDF tool.
- File: the .pptx download.
Tips and common mistakes
- Fonts: the file asks for Noto Sans. Without it installed, PowerPoint substitutes a similar sans-serif, so lines may wrap a little differently than in the PDF.
- Keep editing in Markdown if you can; changes made in PowerPoint do not flow back.
- Check the reading order in PowerPoint's Selection Pane: it follows the order of your Markdown.
- Images in the tool must be data URLs; the app inserts image files for you.
FAQ
Will it open in Keynote and LibreOffice?
Yes. The file was tested by reopening it with python-pptx and by converting it with LibreOffice Impress.
Why are my charts pictures?
Native PowerPoint charts need an embedded workbook. A picture with alt text looks the same everywhere and keeps the description; the PDF and HTML keep charts as vector text.
Are my speaker notes included?
Yes, in the notes pane of each slide. Remove the Notes: sections before exporting if you share the file.
Can I choose 4:3?
Yes, with Slide shape or aspect: 4:3 in the front matter.
